Founded in 1896, the AR has a proud tradition of challenge and criticism, scouring the globe for architecture that provokes and inspires, and relying on its immense archive and critically acclaimed writers to shape architectural discourse. Combine this with a rich history of contemporary editorial design and you have a magazine of interest beyond its natural architectural audience. This September 2025 issue turns its attention to forests, with its cover image of cut trees in British Columbia acting as a bleak reminder of the destruction to indigenous land caused by colonialism and overconsumption. Across its pages, AR explores alternatives—regeneration projects, grass-roots solutions and anti-colonial perspectives. Highlights include: Sebastião Salgado and Léila Wanick Salgado’s work on environmental restoration, Mexico’s modular tree nursery, micro forests in the streets of Karachi, and a feature on Bosco Verticale, the leafy Milanese skyscrapers providing ‘shade to the city’s super-wealthy’.
