Every issue of Nomas explores a different destination or theme through photography, writing, local craftspeople and more. Their iconoclastic 21st issue is dedicated to Naples, a city of binaries where sea and stone collide and ‘the ancient and the contemporary coexist’. For editor Lina Stefanou, the topography of the city is best understood through one of its many delicacies: ‘Cannelloni look like Naples. They are split in two, just as Spaccanapoli runs through the historical centre. The thick ricotta, the tomato and the pieces of eggplant come in layers, like this city’s past that emerges where you dig, wherever you stop. The texture reminds you that life is at once solid and fragile. Like the soil of a city built next to an active volcano.’ Inside, hear from the likes of novelist Erri de Luca, artist Lia Rumma, theatre director Emmanuela Spedaliere, and photographer Luciano Ferrara, whose intimate black and white images of the trans community paint a picture of Naples often left out of mainstream depictions of the city. In between, beguiling images of the frenetic city’s landscapes, architecture and people fill the generously-sized pages. nomasmagazine.com
