We love the way pocket-sized Desired Landscapes brings together personal experiences of cities, the type of observations and snapshots that allow the reader to travel without traveling and to grasp a sense of place within a city. Founder Natassa Pappa runs walking tours of her home city Athens, and that hands-on experience shows in every issue of her magazine. The latest issue is, sadly, their last—such has been the success of Natassa’s adjacent endeavours that she’s made the (difficult!) decision to bring the magazine’s journey to and end and focus on running a physical bookshop space alongside her walking tours and other editorial projects:‘Desired Landscapes will live on—not as a magazine, but through books, maps, gatherings and of course, walking tours: the very forms it quietly emerged from in the first place.’ To sign off: a photo walk through Tirana; Istanbul’s mysticism; traces of Athens’ Ilissos River; food stalls in Oaxaca; a city guide to Venice; the nostalgia of Muscat; and Valletta rendered in beautiful watercolour. On the Journal At work with Natassa Pappa: ‘When I went abroad walking became my main research method, as it creates a linear order to a rather chaotic urban experience. I started by designing an app to explore your own city by drawing a random shape on top of its grid, and then I focused more on mapping.’read more desired-landscapes.com
